On 14th September 2010 we will see the opening of Takashi Murakami's exhibition at Château de Versailles! What a beautiful, elegant, sophisticated setting for some amazing masterpieces!

The exhibition will present a more subdued collection of Murakami's work as organizers are being careful to avoid Murakami’s more pornographic and morbid works, so visitors are unlikely to find masterpieces such as "My Lonesome Cowboy" and "Hiropon," which depict a man using his semen as a lasso and a woman using breast milk as a jump-rope, respectively. Good plan Batman as traditionalist organization Versailles Defence Coordination have collected over 4000 signatures in protest to the exhibition!

Murakami writes on the Versailles website:

For a Japanese like me, the Château de Versailles is one of the greatest symbols of Western history. It is the emblem of an ambition for elegance, sophistication and art that most of us can only dream of.
Of course, we are aware that the spark that set fire to the powder of the Revolution came directly from the centre of the building.

But, in many respects, everything is transmitted to us as a fantastic tale coming from a very distant kingdom. Just as French people can find it hard to recreate in their minds an accurate image of the Samurai period, the history of this palace has become diminished for us in reality.

So it is probable that the Versailles of my imagination corresponds to an exaggeration and a transformation in my mind so that it has become a kind of completely separate and unreal world. That is what I have tried to depict in this exhibition.

I am the Cheshire cat that welcomes Alice in Wonderland with its diabolic smile, and chatters away as she wanders around the Château.

There will be 22 pieces on show, half of which will be new, filling 15 rooms in the palace, including the Hall of Mirrors and the apartments of the king and queen. On his twitter @takashipom he revealed that he's been making a new anime titled "Six Hearts Princess" for the exhibition.

The show runs from 14th Sept 2010 through to 12th Dec 2010. I will for sure be trying to get over there for both the amazing Murakami pieces and the amazing setting of the Palace! If only we could get over there for the opening party with a concert produced by Pharrell Williams (hot). This is in addition to a separate party hosted by French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
