It's all right there in the game's title. Plants vs. Zombies' curious battle between the undead and some very aggressive foliage charmed the hell out of gamers on a wide array of platforms over the past few years, and now developer PopCap Games has announced a sequel, which is slated for release in late spring 2013.

Few concrete details are available, though it'll likely maintain elements from the tower defense-inspired original, in which players placed pea-shooting plants and other organic weapons in backyards and on rooftops to ward off the titular zombies. PopCap promises "a bevy of new features, settings, and situations" in Plants vs. Zombies 2, though it hasn't said which platforms to expect the game on quite yet. Considering the studio's track record, we suspect nearly any platform that can run the game will do so in time.

For a hint of the immensely popular franchise's winning aesthetic and cartoonish tone, check out the below music video, which launched just before the game debuted in early 2009.
